Celebrate Christmas in Scotland!

Regan here. I'm so excited to tell you about my new release. If you are looking for an escape this holiday season, or if you're home alone and wish you were celebrating Christmas with a group of wonderful friends, I have the story for you!

My brand new release, A Secret Scottish Christmas, is a Regency set on the northeast coast of Scotland. Celebrate Christmas in Scotland with spies, Scots and shipmasters—and the Agents of the Crown!

“A bit of a love triangle, handsome spies, artistic heroines and secrets, traditions and romance all wrapped up with a big Christmas bow. Seasonally enchanting and romantically perfect!”
– Chicks, Rogues & Scandals

Scotland 1819

Twin brothers Nash and Robbie Powell of Powell & Sons Shipping, London, sail with their fellow Agents of the Crown to Scotland for a secret celebration of Christmastide, a holiday long frowned upon by the Scottish Kirk. But more than Christmas is being kept secret. The two brothers have accepted an assignment from the Home Secretary Lord Sidmouth to ferret out a fugitive fomenting rebellion among the Scots.

Aileen Stephen, the only daughter of an Aberdeen shipbuilder, had to be clever, devious and determined to gain her place in the family business. She succeeded to become a designer of highly coveted ships. One night, a man’s handsome face appears to her in a dream. When two men having that same face arrive on a ship full of Londoners, Ailie wonders what her second sight is telling her. Is the face she saw a portender of the future, a harbinger of danger, or both? And which of the two Englishmen is the one in her dream?

Two brothers vie for the affection of the Scottish lass but only one stirs her passion. Which one will it be? And what will she do when she learns they are spies?

On Amazon US, UK & Canada

Read an excerpt and join Ailie and the Powell twins in the woods for a snowball fight:

After traveling for a while, Will had the groom stop in a wooded area where there was a stand of mature birch trees, the bark partially covered by snow. “Will’s been scouting the best trees for the Yule log,” Ailie explained.
Nick and Tara alighted from the sledge first. Nash climbed down and helped Ailie to the ground, Robbie right behind her.
They all gathered around Will, who pointed to the trees behind him. “There are some good choices for your Yule log behind me, but to save a lot of labor, I’ve spotted a few we can root out of the ground where they fell. The older ones are better for burning, too, the more knotted the better.” The groom handed Will a rope. “We’ve brought a sled to haul the log back when you’ve found the one you want.”
With that, Will released them to hunt for the log.
Ailie gazed into the forest. The carpet of snow made the woods appear lighter. She surveyed the birch trees within easy range, almost certain her brother had identified a log he liked. But Will would not deprive their guests of having a hand in selecting the one that would burn during the celebration of the English Christmastide.
Plunging into the woods, Nash cried, “Come on, Ailie, let’s find a good one.”
“Not without me,” said Robbie, taking her elbow and urging her forward.
Though it was low in the sky, the sun had not yet set as they entered the woods, their boots crunching on the ice-crusted snow.
A snowy owl, disturbed by the invaders, launched from its perch. Their English guests gasped as the huge bird with its five-foot wingspan flew over their heads.
“Never seen one of those before,” remarked Nick.
“Magnificent bird,” said Nash. “I’ve read about snowy owls.”
When the owl had gone, Hugh leaned up against the thick trunk of one birch, crossing his arms over his chest. Fixing his eyes on Will, he grinned. “Are you certain you don’t want to cut down this one?”
Before Will could respond, Mary pelted her husband with a snowball.
Hugh’s searching gaze found her, a teasing smile on her face. Looking highly offended, he said, “We’ll see about that!” Ailie could tell by his expression as he reached for the snow he was not offended at all, but excited. Forming his own snowball, he launched it into the air to hit Mary’s back just as she turned to run.
The fight was on.
Ailie joined up with Tara, who led the ladies in a battle of great proportions as snow flew all around them. “We shall bury you in snow,” Tara shouted to the men.
Nick tossed a snowball, hitting his wife’s head, thankfully covered with the hood of her cloak. “Not likely!”
Ailie threw a snowball at one twin and then the other. Everyone was so covered in snow she couldn’t tell one Powell twin from the other. She, too, was covered in white, panting for the effort at returning the many snowballs aimed at her. It was great fun.
After a blizzard of snowballs whizzing everywhere, Will called a halt to their battle. “My hands are frozen. Time to hunt the log before ’tis full dark.”

Get Lost in the Highlands!

Folks, please help me welcome a friend of mine who also write Scottish stories! Although, Vonda’s stories take place a few centuries earlier than mine. Let’s get to know Vonda Sinclair!

 WHO IS VONDA?
Vonda Sinclair’s favorite indulgent pastime is exploring Scotland, from Edinburgh to the untamed and windblown north coast. She also enjoys creating hot Highland heroes and spirited lasses to drive them mad. Her historical romances have won an EPIC Award and a National Readers' Choice Award. She lives in the mountains of North Carolina where she is no doubt creating another Scottish story.

STOLEN BY A HIGHLAND ROGUE (HIGHLAND ADVENTURE 8)
When Chief Dugald MacKerrick's ancient and priceless jeweled dagger is stolen, he follows the suspected thief and abducts his young wife to use as leverage to get his dagger back. During his mad dash back into the Highlands, he is incensed to realize he's attracted to his beautiful captive who is more trouble than she's worth. To his further annoyance, this blond Frenchwoman isn't who he thinks she is. She's Camille Bouchard, cousin of the Countess of Draughon, and has no connection to the thief. But maybe the real prize isn't the dagger at all, but the lass.

Camille isn't sure she wants to be rescued from the Highland rogue who has kidnapped her. She likes his bold, take-charge attitude and his determination to reclaim his dagger. Much to her dismay, after a few stolen moments of passion, she finds herself falling for the kilted devil. But Dugald's destiny as chief is to marry the daughter of another chief, not the illegitimate daughter of a Frenchman. How can she possibly give him up once this adventure is over?

AND NOW…

ALEXA: How often to you get lost in a story?
VONDA: I would love to read a lot more than I do but unfortunately there's not always time for that. I have a lot of responsibilities and things that keep me busy outside of writing so I try to spend as much free time as possible writing. Of course, reading inspires me to want to write more so I have to fit a little in a few times per week.

ALEXA: What’s your favorite “love” word?
VONDA: Love is my favorite "love" word. :) It's the most powerful force in the universe and the reason I write romance.

ALEXA: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
VONDA: Dirty Dancing. I think this was an iconic movie for a generation. It contained romance, fun, excitement and many life lessons about standing up for what you believe in, coming of age. To not be judgmental. How you can do things you never dreamed possible. How the best things in life can come from unexpected places.

ALEXA: Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
VONDA: Both combined and merged into a story that is highly romantic and filled with adventure… that's what I write.

ALEXA: What is your favorite trait about your hero in Stolen by a Highland Rogue?
VONDA: Dugald is incredibly determined to reclaim his valuable dagger. I admire that sort of perseverance. It isn't the monetary value that's important to him. This dagger is very special and ancient. It has been in his clan for generations. He feels he let down his late father when the dagger was stolen. He was not guarding it carefully enough. And now he may have prevented his future children and descendants from having it. Despite his willingness to do almost anything to get the dagger back, including kidnapping, he shows compassion to his hostage.

ALEXA: What does it mean to love someone?
VONDA: To accept someone unconditionally and not place any sort of judgment on things they do. To understand that person, or at least try to. To accept them, imperfections, flaws and all because no one is perfect.

ALEXA: High Heels or Hiking Boots?
VONDA: Hiking boots for hill walking in Scotland. :)

ALEXA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?
VONDA: For Highlander Unbroken my upcoming novel, the idea for a dark, troubled Highland hero came to me while listening to the song Demons by Imagine Dragons a few years ago. I then had to figure out how to work it into my series. Once I discovered Maili's brother Neacal MacDonald, first introduced in My Captive Highlander, had a tortured past, literally, I had to write about him. For my novella, Stolen by a Highland Rogue, since my second book (My Wild Highlander) came out I'd wanted to write a story about Camille, a secondary character and the French cousin of the heroine (Angelique). Camille seemed to be a fun person who used weapons and wasn't afraid of a little adventure and danger. She has faced dangerous men in the past, so I knew being kidnapped wouldn't faze her. She would stand toe to toe with the braw Highland warrior and tell him off for abducting her. It was a fun story to write.

ALEXA: Describe an absolutely perfect day.
VONDA: A sunny day in Scotland touring an amazing castle, or hiking to a beautiful place and taking a thousand photos. My recent trip (September '15) to visit Castle Tioram in Scotland comes to mind. It was about 20 to 30 mile drive from our hotel out to the ruin on the remote west coast. My friends and I stopped at several places along the way to take photos of beautiful old bridges, lochs, rivers and mountains. The drive for many miles along a single track (one lane, two way traffic) was tedious and tiring, but once we arrived and saw the castle ruin in the distance on a tiny island in Loch Moidart it was all worth it. We walked a short distance across a sand bar, which the tide sometimes covers over. It was amazing and wonderful to visit the castle that inspired the setting of My Captive Highlander and Highlander Unbroken. Castle Tioram was a MacDonald of Clanranald stronghold for centuries. It was abandoned hundreds of years ago but stands as lingering history that you can see and touch. I felt so fortunate and grateful to get to sit on the rocks for a short while and simply look at it and take hundreds of photos. We were not allowed inside because of the danger of falling masonry, but walking around it was fantastic.

ALEXA: What drew you to write in the genre(s) you do?
VONDA: A major love of Scotland. I think I'm obsessed with the country and I don't know why really, other than it's so amazingly beautiful and has a rich history. There's something about Scotland that resonates in my soul. Getting to visit Scotland and explore it is something I treasure.

ALEXA: What inspires you daily?
VONDA: Readers! I always get more inspired and motivated to write when readers contact me and let me know they're enjoying my stories

ALEXA’S GOTTA ASK, VONDA’S GOTTA ANSWER:
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTOR/ACTRESS & WHY? This is difficult for me to answer because I don't watch that many movies. One favorite that comes to mind is Johnny Depp. I like his versatility and how he always plays unusual and interesting characters. I think he's incredibly talented at what he does.

ALEXA: Got a question you’d like to ask your fans?
VONDA: Do you read Scottish historical romance and if so what is your favorite thing about it?

Thanks so much for visiting us, Vonda! Folks, get busy leaving comments or answers to Vonda’s question. Why? Because she’ll be giving away Celtic earrings and a postcard souvenir from Scotland along with a tote bag swag pack. (North America ONLY.)

POSSESSION OF A HIGHLANDER

If the town finds out her father has died, Brianna will be forced into marriage with her loathsome cousin, Lord Robert, and will lose all of Edzell Castle and its lands. Brianna never thought of all the wealth she protects, the one thing she has left completely vulnerable is her heart. Together, they must navigate a treacherous world of spies and intrigue, of legacy and fidelity, of love and betrayal, to find what is truly worth possessing.

MADELINE MARTIN Madeline Martin lives in Jacksonville, Florida with her two daughters (AKA Oldest Minion and Youngest Minion) along with their two cats: Sketchy Cat who stares at walls and eats fuzz and Lap Cat who has a shoe fetish and enjoys Kung Pow peanuts. All shenanigans are detailed regularly on Twitter.

Madeline graduated from Flagler College with a degree in Business Administration and works for corporate America. Her hobbies include rock climbing, running, doing crazy races (like Mud Runs and Color Runs) and just about anything exciting she can do without getting nauseous. She's also a history fan (really more of a full on history dork) and loves to blog about random curiosities from her research.

After living in Europe for over a decade, Madeline enjoys traveling overseas whenever she can. Her favorite place to visit thus far: Scotland.

THE HIGHLAND Q&A
ANGI: What’s your favorite vice of Colin from POSSESSION OF A HIGHLANDER?
MADELINE: He’s a total sucker for Brianna. At one point he’s keeping a secret he thinks will hurt her. Brianna realizes this and employs a notorious vixen to educate her on seduction. Let’s just say poor Colin doesn’t stand a chance.

ANGI: Benedict Cumberbatch or Chris Pine?
MADELINE: Ooooooooh – Chris Pine!

ANGI: Who’s your favorite Scotsman?
MADELINE: My favorite Scotsman are mostly book boyfriends and it all depends on which book I’m reader or writing. LOL My favorite book boyfriend I’ve read is Jamie Fraser (shocking, right?), my favorite book boyfriend I’ve written is Alec from my next novel, Enchantment of a Highlander. He’s so tortured and such a stoic, quiet mega alpha male.

ANGI: What’s your favorite meal?
MADELINE: Filet mignon with french fries soaking in all the briny, rich steak juice. Pair it with a nice pinot noir and finish it with crème brulee. Ahhhh…. I’m 5,000 calories worth of happy.

ANGI: What’s your favorite theme park food?
MADELINE: Sea World has the most decadent caramel covered popcorn. The bag is $5 and I can eat such a massive amount, it’s truly shameful.

ANGI: Destination…anywhere in the world and why?
MADELINE: I love Scotland. Not only is it beautiful and the people are so friendly, but I find it so inspiring to my writing. It’s like all those little gaps I couldn’t quite put my finger on get filled out with lush detail.

ANGI: Where do you read and how often?
MADELINE: I actually listen to almost all my books. I work a full time job in Corporate American and am a single mom juggling all that with a writing career. I wish I had more time to read, but a second best is popping in my ear buds and tuning in to Audible. It’s kind of exciting – this series is actually going to be on Audible. I heard from the narrator two weeks ago confirming pronunciations, etc. It’s so awesome to think that the medium with which I get my book fix will soon have my books in their lists!

ANGI: What’s your favorite movie of all time?
MADELINE: Dangerous Beauty. It’s a beautifully poetic story about a young woman in Venice and the nobleman she loves, but cannot marry because his station is so much higher than hers. Her mother was a courtesan and teaches her to be one as well. The story is so very romantic and you’ll find yourself sighing at the gorgeously romantic dialogue.

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do when you travel?
MADELINE: Plan! I’m uber Type A and going through all the travel guides and trip advisor recommendations is like my travel cat nip. I love nailing down all the perfect places to visit and book and eat at, so I know wherever I go, I’m getting the best cultural experience my research can afford me.

ANGI: Hiking Boots or Dancing Heels?
MADELINE: That’s a hard question, I love both!! Let’s go with hiking boots in the day and dancing heels at night.

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: What is your favorite thing about Orlando? Besides the memories you make with your minions?
MADELINE’s GOTTA ANSWER: It has to be Downtown Disney. It’s free to go to, but has all these incredible interactive opportunities. The Lego story has lego go cars you can make and race, there are water fountains that shoot water from the ground where the minions run and try not to get wet, and then there’s the Ghirardelli ice cream shop.

I think one of the best memories from there was when OldestMinion and I joined in a dancing competition by accident and made it all the way to the final round! We had to dance together in front of hundreds of people who had stopped to watch. OldestMinion was super nervous, but still danced her heart out and was rewarded later when a much bigger kid stopped her and complimented her awesome moves. I’ve never seen OldestMinion smile so big.

GET TO KNOW MADELINE
ANGI: How often to you get lost in a story?
MADELINE: Daily. I confess between having a full time job and being a single mom, I’m pretty short on time. About a year ago, I discovered audiobooks and I’ve been an avid reader-listener since. At least once a day I find myself lost in a different kind of story from women’s fiction to romance to YA to (one of my favorites) zombie apocalypse. It’s amazing the element a reader can add to an already incredible story. I can tear through a book every three or four days and I absolutely love it.

Me & Daddy
ANGI: Can you tell us about a real-life hero you’ve met?
MADELINE: My dad. It’s a cheesy, Miss America kind of answer, but I can’t help it. My dad served in the Army for over twenty years, but it wasn’t just the places he went and the things he did that made him a hero. Overhearing how his men spoke in admiration of his commitment to his platoon and to each of them, witnessing the raw determination he showed toward every obstacle he faced, being inspired by how hard he worked and how fit he kept – these were the things that make him a hero in my eyes.

I remember being a little girl and eating my breakfast while he stretched and did a series of abs after coming back from a run. Flash forward twenty years and my oldest daughter sat eating her breakfast while I stretched and did a series of abs after coming back from my run. Now she is starting to run races too. He’s a hero and he’s an inspiration, not just for me, but for future generations.

ANGI: What’s your favorite cartoon character?
MADELINE: Belle. I think most avid readers identify with her the most. Not only was I a bookworm, I was brunette in a world that seemed to power-sell blonde dolls and toys, and, well, I was a bit odd too. When Disney released Beauty and the Beast, it was almost like they were saying all of that was not only just OK – it was wonderful. Belle was actually the inspiration for the heroine in my next book, Possession of a Highlander.

ANGI: What do you like about the hero of your book?
MADELINE: I love that Kieran is an alpha male with insecurities he’s able to hide well from others. Not only does he carry the burden of having failed loved ones, he’s had to take on a lairdship he never felt was supposed to be his. Yet never does he come across as weak or indecisive. He is a strong leader who puts others before himself. And also he’s really hot.

Oldest Minion, Madeline & Youngest Minion
ANGI: Would you rather be in a Fairy Tale or Action Adventure?
MADELINE: Action Adventure, hands down. Unless the Fairy Tale has bodies…and a lot of twists and turns…and a princess who can wield a dagger…and a hero who wears a kilt… Yeah, I’ll just stick with Action Adventure. Also, this reminds me of what Youngest Minion said while we were watching Cinderella: You know, Fairy Godmothers seem like a really good thing, but really – they’re kinda creepy.

ANGI: What is your best wish come true?
MADELINE: I’d have to say being published. This has been such an indescribably wonderful ride and the outpour of support from friends and family has been just amazing. I’ve been working toward this for several years – waking up at 4:30 in the morning to write, sacrificing my weekends for workshops and writing. When I first got my printed book and held it in my hand, I got so choked up and remember thinking, “This is the product of determination and dreams.”

ANGI: What's your most favorite thing to do in your state?
MADELINE: Go to Orlando. Every year, I buy an annual pass to one of the major parks. It’s really affordable because the minions and I just drive there that morning, stay all day, then drive home that night. It’s made for an incredible collection of memories and always leaves something to look forward to.

ANGI: What is your biggest vice?
MADELINE: Junk food. I eat really healthy about 90% of the time, but it’s because I force myself. I love, love, love bad food – especially candy. On my mom’s side of the family, we all have a sweet tooth and every woman knows how to make a special fudge recipe. It’s almost like a rite of passage sort of thing – when you can make a successful batch of fudge, you’re officially a Saxon woman. I always make it at writing retreats/get togethers. Everyone calls it Saxon Fudge, which most people claim they say sounds like “Sex and Fudge”. Whatever – it’s awesome and it always a huge hit at parties!

ANGI’S GOTTA ASK: I see on your website that you like to cycle. I vividly remember the first time I was on a mountain bike trail. Got any good stories you can share?
MADELINE’s GOTTA ANSWER:
Me & Ava
I’m going to preface this reply with a disclaimer – I’m kind of a hot mess. My best friend, Ava Milone, talked me into doing a 50 mile mountain bike race called I-Did-A-Ride. I’d never done mountain biking before we started training and Oh my was it a wild experience. I flew off the bike (multiple times), ran into bushes, took out small trees and even fell into a sand burr patch (only to discover I’m allergic to them). I have a pic somewhere of me covered in about a thousand sand burrs, laughing.

After all those months of training, I did the I-Did-A-Ride. I won’t share my time because it was shameful, but I did stop my forward momentum on a fall with my face on a tree stump (I’m thinking I can list that as a super power somehow, right?). It was a lot of work, but it was such an incredible and rewarding experience that resulted in the best Zaxby’s after I’d ever eaten in my life.
