NEW RELEASE! RETURN TO PARADISE RANCH WITH LIZBETH SELVIG IN "HEATING UP PARADISE"

Hi GLIAS Family!

I’m thrilled to be here sharing my brand new novel, HEATING UP PARADISE, with you. It’s my first new book in a year—and the first “Seven Brides for Seven Cowboys” book in two years. My long “sabbatical” was filled with writing discoveries and a few sweats and tears—but I’m really pleased with the book that resulted and I hope you will be, too.

HEATING UP PARADISE is the fifth of seven books in the Seven Brides saga—the stories of the Crockett sisters, who inherit their family’s 50,000-acre Paradise Ranch in western Wyoming. Each woman left home years before and now has a career and a career path far from ranching. What could possibly convince them, one by one, to stay in Wyoming and change course? Why, true love. What else?

So, the men who become part of Paradise Ranch have to be worthy of the challenge and the legacy. And I truly believe each one is!

The first three books in the series feature the oldest Crockett girls—Harper ("The Bride Wore Denim"); Mia ("The Bride Wore Red Boots"); and Joely ("The Bride Wore Starlight") and their strong, worthy heroes Cole, Gabe, and Alec. 

 The next three books feature (and will feature) the Crockett triplets:  Grace,
Kelly, and Raquel--named for their father's two favorite movie stars!).  BETTING ON PARADISE told Grace and Ty’s story. (Coming early 2022: SEARCHING FOR PARADISE, Raquel’s story.)

But today we're celebrating HEATING UP PARADISE—Kelly and Damien’s story! What could a chef and a smokejumper firefighter possibly have in common? Here’s a little about the book:

Kelly Crockett longs

After Afghanistan, Damien found healing at Paradise Ranch in a program that paired veterans with wild mustangs. With his smoke-jumping career in jeopardy, he returns to the ranch and the horses, seeking a miracle cure to save his future. The last thing he needs is a bubbly extrovert-of-a-woman invading his refuge and throwing his plans off course.

Although they fight it, the heat between Kelly and Damien’s opposite personalities builds, but there’s trouble in Paradise: Kelly’s plans cause strife with her sisters. Damien’s past haunts him. And when wildfires threaten the land they both love, each must decide if the heat will forge a new future or tear them apart. Are they brave enough to see that buried beneath the dreams they hoped for is the dream they actually need—one that’s theirs together?

This book is filled with so many adventures as Kelly and Damien struggle to learn what’s important to them. One of the major themes in this book is the healing power of horses. Fun fact: Damien appeared in Book 2 “The Bride Wore Red Boots” as a veteran struggling with Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD. In that book, his mare Panacea
was his healing grace. Pan and her colt Apollo play huge roles in this new book—and Damien spends a lot of  time looking for Pan’s roots and hoping for more healing strength. I loved writing about the horses again—pure magic. 

 For her part, Kelly thinks she knows exactly what she wants in life – to work with a
Michelin-starred chef and become a top-tier chef herself. She does get her chance and what she learns surprises her and makes her rethink her relationship with her triplet sisters.

I love when my characters teach me something as I write and learn about them. I think HEATING UP PARADISE has lots of life lessons about trust, patience, loyalty and love. But it also has some plain fun moments! I hope you’ll check it out and enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Excerpt Tuesdays-Amanda McIntyre

I’ve had such fun writing and expanding on the original Kinnison brothers trilogy (Rugged Hearts, Rustler’s Heart, Renegade Heart) From the stories showcasing the guests in the Last Hope Ranch  stories (renamed by the Kinnison brothers in honor of their step-dad) to the tales of the delightfully quirky secondary characters who live in the small-town End of the Line, Montana, it’s been a blast to meander about the town and tell their stories! Romance, cowboys, small-town humor, drama, danger, intrigue, and of course, Betty’s comfort-food all await those who visit!

I hope you enjoy this FIRST Kiss scene from my upcoming End of the Line novel I call; MR. DECEMBER. Featuring Sheriff J.C. Nash, and accomplished photographer, Olivia Evans, it’s a story of misconceptions, second chances, and small-town meddling at its finest. Enjoy!

First Kiss scene: Mr. December (Fall 2019)

J.C. cleared his throat and focused again on his priorities. This was business. For charity. For the library. For the kids.

“So, I’m thinking, we’ll start out and just take a few shots. Get you used to the camera.” She looked up as she walked over to stand toe-to-toe with him. “And get used to me.” She lifted one dark brow somewhere between mischief and challenge and it nearly did him in.

He stood still, caught under her narrowed scrutiny, her hands her hips. He, too, did some studying—in particular, of how her thin, dark brown T-shirt accentuated her eyes and other attributes further down.

“I’m thinking sexy Sheriff.”

You’ve no idea how right you are, he thought.

She tipped her head when he didn’t respond. “Can you do sexy?”

J.C. opened his mouth to ask if she was blind, but reeled in the snappy comeback.  He licked his lips, holding firm her gaze. “I can give it a try.”

She stared at him an instant longer than he guessed she intended. “Okay then, we’ll give it a try and see what happens.”

She turned away and J.C. looked to the heavens for added strength.

“Why don’t you stand over by the stall and we’ll get started,” she said. “I just need to decide what I want to use on you.”

His brain tweaked at the comment, a purely involuntary reaction that cause him to stumble.

Blaming his over-active sexual idiocy, his boot then caught one of the light-stands, bringing to the floor in a loud crash. In an attempt to catch himself, he knocked loose the wreath from its mooring and it shot with the speed of a rubber band across the barn , taking down another light in the process. His ankle twisted and he went down hard,  smashing her set of perfectly stacked hay bales to smithereens. 

Somewhere in the chaos, he heard a high-pitched squeal and watched as Olivia dove toward another light, saving what no doubt would've resulted in a  disastrous domino tumbling of the lights. Sprawled now on the battered hay bales, arms and legs askew akin to a rag doll, he looked up at caught her horrified expression.

“That’s your idea of sexy?” she asked, righting the light stand to its feet.

J.C. sighed. “Can you give me a hand, here?” Yeah, he didn’t really need her help, but he figured it was damn time he got something out of his system, or this wasn’t going to work.

She offered her hand and he took it hauling himself to his feet. Not letting go his grip, he held her hand  in his and breathed in the scent of her perfume--exotic, floral--conjuring images of moonlit nights and tangled sheets.

“You okay? Did you hit your head?” she asked, eyeing him.

He swallowed hard, certain she heard the pounding of his heart. This whole thing could go sideways fast in this day and age, he wanted to be sure she was maybe as curious as him. “There’s one thing that’s bothering me,” he said. His gaze dropped slowly to her tempting mouth. “Really, it’s more about you. You’re...what’s bothering me.”

She frowned, but he caught the spark of interest in her beautiful eyes.

“Me?” she asked. “How am I…wait, is this about what happened—”

He softly traced the pad of his thumb over her lower lip, pleased when he felt her shiver. “I think you have a pretty good idea what I'm talking about.”

Her hand slipped from his. She rested it on the front of his shirt, the heat from her body causing his heart to race She leaned up on tip-toe, her eyes meeting his. Her breath, hot and sweet, smelled of peppermint.

“Is this maybe your idea of sexy, cowboy?”

Her seduction stirred a powerful reaction below his belt. J.C. cupped her face capturing her mouth in a fierce kiss.  Soft, endless, savoring every angle-he explored the sensation, the taste of her lips. Her soft moan urging another kiss, unleashing a powerful, burning hunger inside him. He slid his arms down the gentle slope of her back and drew her close, deepening the kiss.  Dark, sexy images began to play in his brain.

With an audible sigh, she pushed away and took a step back. Her cheeks flushed, her mouth in an adorable well-kissed state, she licked her lips and averted her gaze from his. He knew she’d felt the heat between them. For him, it had been years in the making. An unrequited crush that frankly, he’d thought was completely out of his system. He glanced down, noting the discomfort in his jeans.

Apparently not.

“That—is what’s bothering you?” she asked, finally looking at him.

He lifted a shoulder. “I’ve had a lot of time to think about it,” he said, allowing a grin to slid up one side of his mouth.

“That must have been painful,” she said and her cheeks deepened with color.

“You’ve no idea.” His answer was honest. And that little test only proved that, to at least some degree, reality was much better than his fantasy. Problem was--now he wanted more. Perhaps given enough time, he'd take up where they’d left off and show her exactly his idea of sexy.

Between the Pages: Special Edition: Quotes


I love quotes. Whether famous or obscure they speak to my soul much like a painting or a beautiful sunset. When in high school, I worked at a card shop/bookstore (who knew?) and Maya Angelou had just released her line of greeting cards. I’d never before read her work, but as I stocked those cards, I began to gain a greater appreciation for the woman and the experiences that gave her such wisdom, such insight into character, integrity--connecting the dots to those different from me in a line that makes us common with one another.

Recent events in our world, most notably those “out of left field” tweets and Facebook comments we all encounter from time to time leave me reeling at times. Do they you?

It can be exhausting, to be truthful and I consider myself a woman of faith, a woman who has built a career on the belief that “love will find a way.”

And I still believe this.

I asked readers recently, what do you like most about contemporary westerns? The rugged cowboys? (duh) The sense of small-town life? Community? Salt-of-the earth type characters?

The answers were very much the same—readers wanted hope in a world that seems to be in a tailspin when it comes to integrity, compassion, grace. Yes, the cowboys are a given—the rugged salt-of-the-earth men and women who overcome the obstacles while in search of their happily ever after. The sense of community and family were also big points brought out.

It does my heart good to know there are readers that value these things, as I do. It’s why I started writing, its why I’ll continue to share my stories of heroes and heroines—of characters who have integrity, passion for the earth, love for their family, friends and community.

I’ll end my short rant on character with one of the most brilliantly written and performed songs, I believe that’s come out in a long while. It offers to me the type of heroes and heroines that I aspire to write and frankly aspire to become myself.

It's  a reminder to us all that being kind, having compassion and integrity all crucial to how we want our society to become.

After a forty-minute drive, Emily found the ranch with no problem. She parked and checked her reflection in the rear view mirror. She fluffed up her dark brown shoulder-length hair, and reapplied her bright red lipstick.
She took a deep breath and wished that she’d figured out a better plan than just flying by the seat of her pants. Trying to figure out what to say first, she wasn’t watching where she was going and her heel sunk into a gopher hole. She regained her footing just in time to avoid falling face first, but in doing so, she stepped in pile of fresh cow manure.
“Shit!” she muttered.
Amen, her grandmother’s voice popped into her head.
And if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, just then a tall cowboy with steel blue eyes opened the door and stepped out on the porch. Lord, have mercy. 
“Can I help you?” he asked.
She opened the gate into the yard and said, “I’m Emily Baker. We visited on the phone last evening.” She looked up into steely blue eyes.
“My brother, Cade, is the one that you talked to. He forgot that he had another meeting this morning in Wichita Falls. I’m Justin Maguire. Please come right in.” He stood to one side and motioned her inside.
She couldn’t track cow crap inside the house so she kicked off her shoes, leaving them on the porch. She glanced down at her chipped toe nail polish and wished that she’d taken time to redo them. But not even ugly toe nails would keep her from her mission—not after that send-off at the center.
“Should’ve been a little more careful about where I was steppin’,” she said.
Justin grinned. “That’s part of ranch life, darlin’. Evidently you haven’t lived on one.”
Oh, honey, you are so wrong about that, she thought.
She studied him from the corner of her eye as they crossed the foyer and entered a huge living room. Scruff covered his square jaw, but she could see a very slight cleft in his chin. He walked with the cowboy swagger and confidence that would have women falling all over him. And he’d called her darlin’—did he flirt with everyone?
“We can talk in here, Emily. Have a seat anywhere. Sorry about the mess.”
 “Thanks. I work at the Oakview Retirement Center in Bowie. Cade and I were going to talk about renting your bunkhouses for a week. Did he let you know if y’all have made a decision?” She spit it all out at once without taking a breath as she sat on the edge of the sofa, legs crossed at the ankle and back straight.
“He only told me that someone from the retirement center was coming by to visit about something as he was walking out the door fifteen minutes ago, but this is the first I’m hearing about it.” His forearms bulged beneath the rolled up sleeves of his black, pearl snap shirt and his hands were huge.
She had to look at him to talk to him, but when she did she noticed that the top two snaps of his shirt were undone, giving her a peek at light brown chest hair. She couldn’t get her thoughts together looking right at him. She’d expected the Maguire brothers to be her dad’s age. “There are five elderly folks at the center. They have some problems but basically they’re pretty spry to be in their seventies.” She glanced down at the coffee table where papers were strewn about. “You’re building a house? Are you an architect? I thought the Maguires were ranchers.”
“We are but I’m trying my hand at drawing up the plans for our foreman and his new wife,” he answered.
Emily leaned forward. “Doesn’t look like it’s going to be very big.”
“Not here at first but the design will make it easy to add on later.” He chose a chair close to the coffee table where the plans were laid out. “So tell me, Miz Barker, more about this idea you’ve got.”
“Baker, not Barker,” she corrected him.
“Sorry about that. I’m better with faces than names. Might not be real good with names, but I never forget a pretty face.” He raked his fingers through light brown hair that had definitely had a cowboy hat settled on it not long ago.
Don’t flirt with me, cowboy, she thought.

E.E.: How often to you get lost in a story?

Carolyn: Every single time I write a story, I get lost in it. I always drag my feet a little when it comes time to write the last two chapters because the characters that have been in my head for weeks have become like family. It was especially hard with Cowboy Brave because I loved the Fab Five, and Justin’s kindness toward them. I really loved Emily and have often wished I was as comfortable in my own skin as she is.

E.E.: What sound or noise do you love?

Carolyn: I absolutely love the sound of the ocean. I don’t need to wade in it, swim in it or ever put my toes in it—all I need to do is sit on the white sands of the beach and listen to the tide roll in and out to be at peace with the world. Noise is different than sound—so with that in mind, I like the noise of country  music. Not so much the new alternative country but the old stuff by George Jones, Travis Tritt, George Strait and Conway Twitty.

E.E.: What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Carolyn: I read “The Godfather” long before it was a number one best seller and fell in love with the story. When the movie came out, Mr. B had plans to take me to see it, but alas, I broke my glasses that very day. I was heartbroken until my friend reminded me that her eight year old daughter had the same prescription I did. She loaned me her glasses, and I might have looked a lot strange, but I could see and that’s all that mattered. I’d say my second favorite is Steel Magnolias. I watched it three times in one day and cried every time. Any book or movie that can evoke that kind of emotion time after time, is amazing.

E.E.: What’s the first thing you do when you finish writing a book?

Carolyn: I start another book. I just finished Christmas with a Cowboy yesterday, and I’m already working on my next women’s fiction book. I’m happy when I’m writing—and nobody wants me to be unhappy!

E.E.: Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?

Carolyn: I would love to sit down to dinner with the Fab Five—that’s the five senior citizens that Emily takes to the ranch for a little vacation in Cowboy Brave—Sarah, Patsy, Bess, Otis and Larry. They entertained me so much with their antics in this book that I think it would be a hoot to have dinner with them.

E.E.: What would you say is your most interesting quirk?

Carolyn: I’m slighty superstitious. I do not walk under ladders. I always eat black eyed peas and greens on New Years (even though I’m not real fond of either). I will always turn around and go another way if a black cat crosses my path. If I find a penny, it has to be heads-up before I pick it up.

E.E.: How did you come up with the idea for your book?

Carolyn: My sister and I used to say that we were going to the nursing home together, and we were going to be so ornery they’d want to kick us out. I thought it would be a hoot to put five really sassy senior citizens on the Longhorn Ranch and see what they’d do. My sister, Patti, is the inspiration for Patsy, and there’s a little bit of me in Bess.
